In the event of a possible hoax I wanted to share what happened to me today in Salinas: A woman approached me, crying, as I was entering church this morning. She is blond, blue eyed "gringo" - from south africa, english speaking, not sure on age. Said her name was Petra. Claimed to have been robbed and all of her stuff stolen, including phone, money & passport. She was apparently at the church to ask the priest for money for bus fare to Peru to get her passport re-issued as there is no south african embassy in Ecuador. I, being too nice and too naive, gave her a little something - as I know first hand how it feels to be robbed and be left with no phone and no money to get bus fare. Come to find out, a friend later told me that a "Petra from South Africa" had her passport and money stolen in Salinas back in February ..... coincidence????
Wonder if she is still waiting since Feb to get that bus fare saved up? [rhetorical question].
PS - I later saw her drinking coffee in one of the restaurants on the Malecón.
PPS - I later looked up on line and yes, there is a South African consulate in Quito...
