Salinas or Quito on tight budget

Hi, I'm hoping to move to Ecuador in approximately a year or so. Actually I was suppose to move to Costa Rica last year till I came down with cancer, and thought it best to clear that up before moving to a new country.

I'm torn between Quito and Salinas. I like the water but am concerned about the cost of living in basically a resort area. i will be living on very little $1046.00 monthly and want to better my situation, because I want to explore and looking at possibly exporting some items, but since i haven't had a chance to really to investigating the costs right now it's just a thought.

I'm not worried about crime, I'm sure that it is really no different than any other place caution is to be exercised no matter where you are. I'm more concerned about finding reasonable, medium quality longterm accomodations. Which I have been getting a very mixed picture as to what is realistic. Any help or ideas there?

I would like to come down and explore for a month or so but finances won't allow at the moment, though I have a ticket from last year that I have to book soon or lose it. I could get down there but with no finances for lodging or food, thought it better to wait.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
