Quito/Cuenca vs. San Miguel de Allende

Hi to All. When speaking with friends and relatives (except of course my Ecuadorian brother-in-law) about us possibly retiring to Ecuador in a few years, responses have ranged from "Are you crazy?" to "Why not at least consider San Miguel de Allende?" I have visited Ecuador on vacation visiting Quito, Otavalo and Latacunga, and loved it. I have not visited San Miguel but love the various cultural activities that would be available to me. Can anyone weigh in on the differences between say living in Quito or Cuenca to living in San Miguel. I do know that San Miguel is pricey. Thanks in advance.
