Ecuador or Costa Rica?

Hello again,
After a couple of months of research, my top candidates for retirement in L.A. are Costa Rica, Ecuador, and maybe Antigua GT.
Did any of you look into Costa Rica or Guatemala before you chose Ecuador? I recently met a terrific Alaskan who spent years visiting CR before he decided to choose Ecuador. I really enjoyed hearing his perspectives on those two countries
I'd be interested to hear from all of you what other countries you explored, before deciding that Ecuador was best for you.
