Feeling things out

So if one is just begining to look at Ecuador as a future place to visit and live - where do I start? I have been stumbling around on the internet for awhile now. Looking for a lifestyle change for us in our 30s and duaghter almost 5 yo. He's a civil engineer and I am a SAHM homeschooling, but have a communications degree. We would still need to make some sort of income if we move.
Right now we live south of St. Louis on 5 acres with animals (dogs to donkey) and a large garden which I have done some market gardening with. Would love to here some options... I am not sure where to begin.
