Renting a Vehicle in Ecuador

I am planning a 10 day trip and first time visit to Ecuador in May. Probable destinations are Otavalo, Cotacacchi, Banos . . . . something like that. Flying into Quito.

I have been advised by one former resident (and native) there to Not drive there. She said that it is too crazy. I would tell you that I am somewhat accustomed to that.

I have made a number of trips to Costa Rica and always rented a car there and traveled throughout the back country. I want to experience the scenery and be able to stop where I want.

I have heard that public transportation is readily available there however I don't really relish being on a bus everywhere I go with all of my travel personal belongings.

I like to move around a lot and see different places. I drive commercially for a living so consider myself to be quite savy amongst crazy drivers.

My Espanol is quite limited but I am learning more all the time. And I am Very Gringo looking with fair skin and silver hair.

So my friends . . . . what would you recommend? Rent a vehicle . . . . . or not?
