The 90 day rule for new residence

There seems to be no final and definitive word on just what the law is...what it is at some moment in time....the consistant is change in the law. But, as of today, which interpratation of the 90 day rule is correct?

1. no more than 90 days TOTAL out of Ecuador in each of the first two years of a retirement residence permit.

2. no more than 90 days AT A TIME out of Ecuador for each of the first two years of residence.

I am sure Gaby in Quito in December told me #2 was the law. I made sure to ask her in four different ways including drawing diagrams. I stopped short of the punch and judy show on the theme.

Today an expat with some travel under his belt and a gringo business person (with decades here) both said #1 was the case.

It is like trying to photograph fog, getting any low down on this...so what does the combined wisdom on the forum believe?
