Lessons for expats and visitors from Egypt

The situation in Egypt is an interesting lesson for all expats and those thinking of moving to Ecuador. Just remember the alleged coup attempt a few months ago.

In my email today I received the warden message - from Egypt - It was an email telling American citizens on what to do and what action was being taken to help Americans out. Well - the internet had been cut off. Also, one American on television said he tried to call the embassy emergency number and there was no answer. Furthermore, the warden message stated that all Americans would have to pay the government back for the flight. Also, the government would only transport by air to the nearest safe harbor and citizens would be required to find their own way back to the states.

The point of all this is to remind all of us - that we are responsible for doing our best when things go downhill real fast in terms of survival.

Don't expect the marines to come in and save the day. Even if there is a good Warden system don't count on it in a real emergency. One thing that has been good from the Eygpt situation is all cells and the internet were down. Some people were communicating with a land line. So when you rent or buy make sure you get a land line if at all possible. That will often be the last thing to go.

And remember, not only have a plan to survive but remember Ecuador is very prone to disasters. If the earthquake last year had not been as deepas it was, you would have been looking at something similar to what Chile experienced.
