Transferring funds from Canada

Hi! I'm Lorraine. I'm from Alberta, Canada and am currently in Cuenca checking it out and will be leaving tomorrow. I plan to take early retirement and move here hopefully this summer with my 3 dogs. Rent first then buy next year. I was told by an US expat from the coast that Canadians can't transfer money directly from Canada to Ecuador, they have to transfer it to the US and then from the US to Ecuador. My bank (Scotiabank) isn't affiliated with any banks in Ecuador. I'd appreciate any info on this.
