At 05:50 this morning two buses belong to the Coactur cooperativa hit each other head on causing the death of 16 people and injuring 45. The accident happened in the hamlet of Pasillero las aguas, Ecuador, at km 56 on the road between Guayas and Manabi. Traffic was haulted for five hours. Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and bald tires contributed to the accident. Both drivers died. The bus company is based out of Portoviejo.
Tonight on Ecuavisa one of the officials interviewed stated he thought speed was the primary cause of the accident and that the buses may have been going as fast as 75 miles an hour. The tires looked bad that they showed on the report. The buses were large over the road buses.
