cell phone in EC (I know, I know...)

I realise that this issue has been beaten to death on this forum, but I'm going to post this anyway... I want to have a cell phone in EC. I mostly text (I would say 90% of the time.) Here is what I have gleaned from previous posts. I should bring an american cell phone when I come and have the chip changed when I get there. OK, that's fine. But what is the easiest way to keep in contact with people in the US when I have an Ecuadorian cell number? Can I get a US number, or is that just too expensive? I know this is naive, but I have never called to the stated from another country, or visa versa. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
