pre-loaded credit cards

Has anyone used pre-loaded credit cards while in EC? I was down last Dec. and my regular card got shut down by my bank (even though they knew where and when my trip was).
I am thinking that as a backup to my card I would see about a couple pre-loaded ones ... instead of carrying too much cash.
