where to keep money

my wife and i bought a apartment in vistazul, san clemente manabi. we are using it as a vacation home for now and plan to retire there. my question is where is a safe place to keep money in the country while we are there as well as when we are back in the states. we are going down in a few weeks for a furniture/appliances spree to furnish the place. didn't know if we can open up a bank account in bahia not being an ecuadorian citizen. do we have any options?
