driver's license

I'm new in Ecuador and have the 12-IX 6 month tourist visa. Can anyone tell me if I can us my US driver's license with that visa if I own my own car or use a private person's car? I was told by the office of tourism that it is only valid on a rental car. I'm not quite ready yet to commmit to full time residency, but would like to buy a car to explore while I'm looking for a place to settle. I speak Spanish perfectly but that hasn't been too helpful in getting a straight answer. Suggestions?
