Earthquake Warning Issues

With the number of earthquakes in Quito last weekend - the papers are writing again about the risks. And they are real.
According to a recent article 30 barrios in Quito are at extreme risk in the event of a severe earthquake ---- One study has shown that 25,000 to 30,000 residents of Quito would be impacted. A lot depends where a big one hits - but I believe that the number would be closer to 100,000 or substantially higher based on a study done in the 1990's.

It is not a question of if there will be a large earthquake but when -- Ecuador and Quito have a very long history of earthquakes. The latest large earthquake was in 1987 at 6.9 and 1000 were killed. Other major earthquakes have been in 1755, 1797, 1859, 1868. Those were when the city was much less populated. In 1868 the population was only 45,000 - compared to over a million at the present time.

P. S. The coast is also high risk. in Bahia ----- A number of years ago - the town was basically for sale for free ---- the town suffered severe damage.
