Travel Woes Between Atlanta and Bahia de Caraquez

While we have only made the trip to Bahia twice, we are still looking for a better, quicker, easier (you choose the adjective) way to get from Atlanta to Bahia. Can't wait for the airport in San Vicente to open. Both of us experience altitude sickness in Quito (myself more so than spouse). We would entertain going to Panama or Costa Rica or you name it first, to avoid Quito and that wait for the flights to Manta. So...what is the most least frustrating way to get from Atlanta to Bahia? We don't enjoy the long lay-overs in Miami and have to spend the night in Quito, which, with our altitude sickness (yes, I know we can get medication for that) for me is unbearable. All I want to do is hole up in our room until time to catch flight to Manta. Any suggestions? We are NOT hole up in your room kind of folks. When we are someplace new we want to get out and explore! Thanks for any and all ideas/suggestions!
