Travelling...travellers' cheques/credit/debit cards/cash?

Looking for advice from other ex-pats. I'm wondering what's the best way to carry money while I'm in Ecuador for an extended visit, exploring permanent retirement relocation? I've read conflicting advice on different forums...many say to carry US cash...financing an eight week trip with cash means carrying around a LOT of it...feels so risky to me. Are credit/debit cards widely received by commercial institutions? What about travellers' cheques? Have read they can be difficult to cash.

It's now less than two weeks till I leave Canada, ALL advice appreciated!

Thanks again,
Deborah.
