tax refund

Howdy, my wife and I just returned from a wonderful 7 weeks in Ecuador. We spent lots of money and saved all our reciepts, totaled up the taxes charged and thought we would find a place to ask for a refund of those paid taxes as we left the country. Didn't happen as I thought it might at the airport. Can anyone shed some light on this tax refund thing? I think they called it a VAT tax in England.
