You gave some advice on this forum recently about securing personal documents. You suggested putting as small lock on a suitcase there they were stored. That is one of the stupidest things you have written. It will alert anyone interested that there is something of value in that suitcase and that it will be destroyed trying to open it, or what is more likely, the entire suitcase will be stolen.

NOW folks, I am a pretty experienced traveller, been to 4 countries here, have started coming to Ecuador and Colombia back in the early seventies, and I have been to Peru oh about 20 times and bolivia about 8.....I personally and alone have crossed Lake Titicaca, on bus and boat, 6 times by myself, also took the train to Cuzco. When In Peru, I bus to Ayacucho, did that twice....and stay in the OLD city...and NEVER have I been robbed, or accosted or even propositioned!

My advice to put a padlock on your suitcase while you keep it in a decent hotel room (not a dive) is not only good info, but has worked for me for 20 years now!...Stupid? I don't think so.

Theft in decent hotels are sometimes "little things" and no room cleaner is going to steal your whole suitcase! No hotel employee is going to "rip your suitcase apart" to get your things! Go stay in a $5 a night dive in a bad neighborhood, they might steal you too!

If you have no safety deposit box, if you have no place to leave your documents, give them to the hotel people in a sealed and taped package and hope for the best. I HAVE heard of hotels who are supposed to be 'keeping' things have 'misplaced them.'

...OR lock them in your Big suitcase, OR carry them with you! Not too many options here...
