My headache is getting worse by the minute

I joined this forum and made my first post just about a month ago. My significant other and I are seriously considering a permanent move next spring and were trying to decide between Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador. From what we have been able to gleen from the internet we have pretty much decided Cuenca Ecuador is a perfect place for us. Well that's before the last 30 days or so of trying to get GOOD information about living there. Now I'm starting to think we'd be better off moving to someplace like beautiful downtown Up Ur Butt because it's probably easier to get reliable information from someone there who doesn't want to empty my savings account by selling me supposedly "FREE" guides, handbooks, newsletters, etc. I'm sorry if I sound extremely cynical but is everyone advertising free info about living in Ecuador a crook? I'm beginning to wonder. I have gone to countless websites offering FREE info and all you get is crapmail wanting to sell you stuff. I will not mention names but I went to one website run by an American who has been living in Ecuador for the past 14 years. Everything looked very professional and offered a free, free, free handbook to everything you need to know about living in Ecuador. Just sent your email address and it's yours. Yeah right. I sent my email address and all I've gotten is newsletters telling me about all the wonderful reports and guides that I can get. Starting at about $50 and going up from there. I may have been born at night but it wasn't last night. I have absolutely no problem with people trying to make a living but be honest about what you offer me. If I want it I'll buy it.
Now, having ranted and raved sufficiently I would be very interested in hearing from members of this forum who can convince me that Ecuador and specifically Cuenca are the place for us. I would like info on life there, prices, types of cuisine native to Ecuador, rental housing, legal fees for obtaining visa's, etc. I'm sure there is much more I need to know. If you are out there living a very happy life in Ecuador and wish to share some email conversation and tips with a retired military vet who would love to start here as a friend and possibly become a neighbor next year I would love to hear from you. If you are running a business providing information and assistance to expats I'd also like to hear from you. I may be happy to buy from you. Just please be honest about yourself and what you can do for me. I don't think that's a lot to ask.
