Crime Everywhere When You Least Expect It

Just when we were feeling smug about crime, received this post from a dear Ecuadoran friend only an hour ago:

Hi Dr.Berger,

I don't answer to you because I had a terrible accident, on monday mourning I went to Quito because I had to change a check they pay me for XXXX, I was walking from Bco Pasifico to my card with Jorge and close to the parking lot in the shopping where my sister had the store 4 guys in a motorcycle assault me with gun they true me to the floor they kick me they broke my head with the pistol I had two injuries, ematomes all over my body, I was in my sister house until this mourning I have to come to my house, now I do not have a penny, no documents no cell, nothing at all I have to start again from 0, I don't understand why all this tings happen to me now I don't know what to do, I need some body I really don't know what I need anymore,.

In addition to the lesson to be learned from our friend's experience (this was broad daylight, mid -morning, downtown Quito), can anyone offer advice we can give her to help her immediate situation?
