police report

I need to hear from other readers, esp. Americans who have come to Ecuador to live about getting your initial police report. I live in a small county in Texas. I do not live in the city. Therefore, either I go to the Sheriff of that county (which would only write on a piece of paper that I have no legal problems) or I go to the state police and have them get me a police report. The only problem with the state police report is the only way to get it is to get a fingerprinted and sent into the FBI and then have a report sent back. I have read various postings from people about what to do, however, all the answers are different. Does the Ecuadorian immigration office want a report from the State police or from the local Sheriff ? I guess the local county sheriff could type it out. thanks for any information.
