Sports Equipment and Airport Entry

I am looking for information regarding entry through the airport at Quito with sports equipment.
I am bring and inflatable kayak (actually its a bit more than that but we'll be calling it a kayak.)
I know the weight restrictions, airline requirements ect.. from the US end. I am waiting on a maximum dimension form the airline as I,m flying on during the embargo.
70lbs apply though for 1rst class rather than the 50lb rule.
Has anyone had or know of someone who has brought in sports equipment without a hassle at the last x-ray point before you leave the terminal? (Those of you who are like me and bring in tons of stuff know this is the critical point to clear in the system.)
Kayaks, folding bicyles, surf boards, wind surfers, and the likes all apply.
For those of you who have no experience on the subject I know all about the aduana ec site but I,m not conviced that the reference to 'sports equipment' here may cover the items I am refering to. I suspect this is one of those issues that can be a problem based on who your dealing with at the x-ray machine.(which is why I had to BS a little bit to get my 32" LED Samsung through duty free.)
If I do have an issue with high end sports gear can I pay a duty and keep rolling?
I,d like to know if anyone has brought in any high end sports gear without a hassle?
I,m leaving my stuff at my condo so its a one way deal.
