2012 General Election Dates & Deadlines

From the Expat Exchange Blog: Expats Get Out And Vote!

American Expats should be aware that 2012 General Election Deadlines are rapidly approaching.

American expats are just like any other demographic. They are citizens of the United States and deserve to know how they stand to be affected by either candidate, and congress, after the election. The U.S. government is one of the few governments that taxes global income, and the only one in the industrialized world. It seems fair for those that live abroad, then, to expect a greater degree of clarity when it comes to how the nations laws will affect them.

Both President Obama and Republican challenger Gov. Mitt Romney, in general, have been vague on details. And the media continues to let them get away with it. One can only hope that in the upcoming debates, the moderators will hold them accountable for not just what they say, but what they aren't saying. With 16 trillion dollars in debt and an global economy that could generously be described as shaky, it's not just fair for us to expect greater clarity, I'd say it's morally incumbent upon all of us to demand it. This would help expatriates understand what the implications are for life abroad.

So, regardless of where you are, or what party you're in, don't be an ostrich with your head buried in the sand. Hold your head up high and get serious about researching the realities of what your vote means in the coming elections. There's little more than one month left. So, it's time to turn off the television, put down the novel (or whatever other distraction you prefer to avoid the mess in politics), and thoroughly get to know the candidates.

Pollsters will often describe a certain percentage of voters in the middle that are pessimistic and feel their vote doesn't matter. We challenge you to quickly do more research and find that spark of inspiration that will reengage you as a force that helps shape the direction of what is to come over the course of the next four years... and beyond.

ExpatExchange is a politically independent service, but we do encourage everyone to vote, and to do so as an informed voter!

The good folks at the Overseas Vote Foundation have provided this 2012 General Election Deadlines Chart.
