COFFEE TIME IN CUENCA

One of the quirks about Ecudorians are their coffee habits. Ecuador produces some of the world's best coffees but most of it is exported. If Ecuadorians drink coffee, It is usually instant. If you just ask for coffee in a restaurant or private home, you will get a cup of hot milk and a jar of instant coffee. There are places like the Coffee Tree, Cafe Mocha and Bananas and a few others that serve Americano coffee, but usually with hot milk on the side which is called cafe Americano con leche--if you want it black it is "sin leche"--sin meaning without. It is the same if you order non carbonated water--agua sin gas.

There are two very small shops in Centro that sell freshly roasted coffee either ground or whole bean which is grown near Loja. The cost is $3.50 for a 500gr bag which is 1.1lb. They also sell a 250gr bag. They roast coffee every day and quite often it is still warm in the bag. The coffee is a darker roast and I usually use about one tablespoon per cup. It is heavenly.

The shop is called Cafe de Altura and the coffee is El Tostador. it is located on Sucre 10-20 y Padre Aguirre. It is diagnally across the street from the flower market. The second shop is about 5 doors away and is also very small but I don't remember the name.
