Where is the wildest place on Earth? According to the National Geographic Magazine in Ecuador! January 2013 issue brings very interesting and informative article on Yasuni National Park titled Rain Forest for Sale - demand for oil is squeezing the life out of the world's wildest place.
The balance between necessity and willingness to preserve environment and economy is extremely hard and sometimes just impossible to achieve. That mostly unexplored rain forest still protected for now, holds an estimated 850 million barrels of untapped oil reserves.
Biodiversity of the Yasuni is mind boggling. In a single hectare there are as many insect species as are known in all of the U.S.A. and Canada combined.
"The park sits at the intersection of the Andes, the Equator, and the Amazon region, an ecological bull's-eye where extremely rich communities of plants, amphibians, birds, and mammals in South America converge."
One of the many species of birds living there is called hoatzin: "the peasant-size hoatzin fans its feathers, often while strutting along a branch, but flaps its wings clumsily when it takes to the air. It lives near swamps, digest food by fermentation like a cow, and is so odd that scientists can't decide how to classify it."
