making contacts in cuenca

my question concerns meeting ex-pats in cuenca. i was there about five years ago for a few days and my traveling companion and i quickly, without seeking it out, ran into a active, welcoming group of ex-pats who seemed to gather fairly regularly for dinner, drinks, talk, etc.

im thinking about heading back again this march and spending about 5-6 weeks in cuenca and southern ecuador/northern peru. but this time i would be by myself. im a reasonably experienced traveler but at age 64 i no longer enjoy that much time traveling alone. im wondering how likely it is, if i use cuenca as a home base, that i will meet ex-pats and other travelers for socializing? and, if thats likely, what the best places and methods to do so might be? have just begun to check out the forums, chat boards, and look at things like gringo tree. any thoughts, advice, links, etc would be greatly appreciated.
