A story about pet lovers.

Here is a story about the lengths pet owners will go to bring their beloved animals to Ecuador or most any other country.

We have 2 guests in our guesthouse from Toronto, CA who arrived about a week ago with two dogs; a French Bulldog and another of mixed parentage. Bringing the French Bulldog to Ecuador by plane was the problem; no airline will carry this breed or several other breeds known to have breathing difficulties, like Maltese, Shi-tzus, English Bulldogs, Bull Terriers etc. Although I brought my Maltzu 3 years ago from Miami without any problem. I just did not go to confession and put the dog’s breed on the American Airlines reservation form.

This is where the story gets interesting. Our guests drove from Toronto to Miami in a one-way car rental. Then they boarded a cargo flight to Ecuador, that they had made reservations on. They, their two dogs and 3 crew were the only passengers on cargo version of a 747, which can hold up to 400 persons. They were on the upper deck that was heated and pressurized. The cost was $600 each and $400 each for the dogs. The flight from Miami landed in Latacunga in Cotapaxi province, about 60 miles south of Quito. 20 hours later, a $1,000 poorer from having paid customs duty on the dogs, they arrived in Cuenca, after paying a man to drive them here. The guests and the critters survived, but their wallets are a little thinner.
