Maybe some expats who have been living in Ecuador for some years can give me some tips. I saw a classified ad in a Guayaquil newspaper yesterday for a property of a few hectares outside of Guayaquil. The advertiser gave his phone number and email address, but no price. Some of you may be millionaires, but I'm not. So it is important to know what price we are talking about first---for example if I only have $40000. to spend, and I see the price is $100k, or $150K, then there is no point in wasting their time or mine -- it is simply out of my range! I'm trying to figure out why they did not put the price in the ad. Could they have two prices---one for Ecuatorians and another for gringos? If I call the number, they will instantly recognize that I'm a Gringo with the first words out of my mouth...even though I speak Spanish. Si emailed and simply asked the price: Estimado, que precio tiene la propiedad? (What is the price of the property?) They have no replied and I am sure that since it was a new ad yesterday they are certainly checking their email -- probably receiving emails in their smartphone as I do. So why are they not replying? Could it be they are offended because I didn't do the usual courteous thing and FIRST say "Buenas Tardes" in my email? Is that genuinely necessary in a business transaction? I mean...do they want to sell the property -- or exchange greetings? I suspect the seller may be wanting to give a different price (higher) to gringos than Ecuadorians, thus they don't want to publish the price.
