Upcoming Travel in Ecuador

My wife and I are coming to Ecuador, from October 14th until October 30th,, for a 16 day visit.
Knowing that we can't accomplish every thing and go everywhere, we are still trying to see and evaluate as much as we can.
We have an interest in visiting the mountainous regions, but have no desire to live there.

We will most likely want to retire, in 2016, on the coastline of Ecuador. We are not "party animals", but do want to have the amenities that Ecuador can offer. We would probably like to live outside a larger city, such as Manta, and yet still enjoy the peacefulness and solitude that Ecuador, in general, offers.

Are there any other major/minor coastline hub towns/cities, that we might explore, besides Salinas?

If any of you have travelled Ecuador's mountainous and coastline regions, we would love help, in setting an itinerary, that would begin and end, in Guayaquil, which is our airport of departure and arrival.

We were considering the following general itinerary of Guayaquil, then Cuenca, then Quito, through to Ibarra. From Ibarra, we would travel to Esmeraldas and then down the coastline back to Guayaquil. That itinerary would be over 1,100 miles.
We would most likely rent a car, unless advised otherwise. We are both photographers and want the freedom to shoot Ecuador, at our own pace. And yet, spend enough time to get a quick "feel" for places to retire to.
