My wife and I will be spending up to 3 months in Ec starting mid August. I have read many opinions about car rentals but what I am not reading is mandatory insurance. I finally decided to rent fm Avis for 30 days at a cost of apx $700 but am worried that the mandatory insurance cost, which is not quoted, could be double or more. I have a couple of questions. We are currently in Costa Rica and I have noticed that the mandatory insurance cost is different from every company.. from $16 a day to $34 a day. So anyone with detail knowledge on what is required and who to rent from to get the cheapest rate, I would be most appreciative. Having driven in Panama and Costa Rica, I am well aware of the INTERESTING driving habits so I can deal with that. The real question now is one of cost. Oh and a second question.. Our trip is flying into Guayaquil, then on to Salinas and up the coast before heading back to Guayaquil and then to Cuenca.. is there a good car rental agency anywhere on the coast since I can find nothing in Salinas.
