Advice on cash access.

I will be arriving in Cotacachi for two weeks to arrange a long term rental. Then I will be returning to the U.S. to finalize our move to Ecuador.
I understand the need for cash and am wondering about having enough on hand to take care of my initial stay in a hotel/hostel/Inn, a driver, my daily expenses for meals and such, and also having a deposit and possibly several months rent for the place I find.
Everyone advises to bring small bills. Do I stuff a briefcase with a couple thousand dollars in ones and fives? Seems it might raise eyebrows at the airport. Using ATMs on arrival would limit me to a certain daily withdrawal and would require several days to accumulate a substantial amount. Would bringing hundred dollar bills and then exchanging them at a local bank be an option?
I figure others have gone through this and can advise me.
