Verizon iPhones in EC

Hello. I've done some forum topic searches and can't seem to get settled on the right answer to a common question.

I have two 5s iPhones issued by Verizon and I use their plan in the USA.

Best Buy says that Apple wants me to be able to use their products anywhere and I need only obtain a "sim" card in order to use the phone(s) in Ecuador.

I'm parroting others from internet forums(this is a horrible idea and will eventually make you look stupid even if you aren't so don't ever do it)who say that you must have "gsm" bandwidth, some phones have four different bandwidths, and that changing "sim" cards to a claro or moviestar will not let your phone work in EC!

I do not know what a sim card does myself.

Bottom line: Will my two phones be able to work as intended in EC after I take them to claro or moviestar and get some service/minutes going on?

I thank you in advance for your kind responses and patience. As you all know, there is much bad information floating around.
