Interested in Equador

My wife and I currently live in Texas, are finally empty nesters, mid 50's and are considering early retirement. Ecuador has both of us intrigued. We are both very healthy and spend our weekends hiking, mountain biking (extreme), kayaking etc.. Our vacations are adventure oriented as we go to Colorado USA annually to hike 14n'rs etc..

From my initial research, being close the the Andes for a retirement of outdoor living may fit the bill, somewhere in the Ecuadorian highlands perhaps.

Initially, we would take a few test trips to a mountain/valley town to explore but we envision our ourselves eventually buying a small home on the side of a mountain with an acre or so.

We initially thought about retiring to Colorado but in order to do that, I would have to work longer. Reading the posts here, talking to expats and reading the IL magazine has us looking at alternatives.

We are already sold on the low cost of living, the kind gentle people of Ecuador and the beautiful country. More specifically, I'm interested in the recreation activity available when we are traveling around the country and goofing off.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
