Getting from Quito to Vilcabamba

Hi folks, my name is Dan and I'm doing my initial trip down to check things out prior to relocating and I'm heading down to Vilcabamba. I'll be flying in on 8/2 and getting in around 11pm. So two things.

First, any recommendations on the best way to make the trip down? I was originally planning on taking the bus to see some of the country, but sounds like a long ride with no rest stops. Looks like flights are running 80-90 bucks with all the taxes, etc. So for those of you that have made the trip, how do you usually like to get down there?

Second, given that I'll be getting there in the dead of night, any ideas on a good overnight stay? Don't really think I'll be spending any time there when I get in, I'll be coming back up in mid September to escort my wife down and can check it out then. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks
