Crafts/Goods Export

I'd like to visit the Otavala/Cotacachi area both to get an idea about living in the area, as well as looking at the crafts/goods as part of my income strategy while living there. I'd like to do several sourcing trips to test the market and get a feel for the area.

In my research I have found several references to "suitcasing" your purchases out of the country, however this seems pretty unrealistic and small time as well as expensive.

I also understand that the postal service is slow, expensive and unreliable. I am pretty sure that I am not the only person considering or doing this as an income source - so how do others do this? I have not been able to find any sensible information about this online and I have looked and searched for this for quite some time.

The other question - if "suitcasing" is the only viable and safe option in getting products out of the country - will multiple annual trips put you on the radar for more thorough searches, impounds and confiscations of goods, and how does the export tax situation look like?

Would love to hear from those of you who have experience with this, or can provide me any sources or websites or contacts to approach for more info.
