Finally making the trip...

I have been investigating a place to retire to for about 3 years. Currently live in St. Louis and considered the Caribbean and though I loved visiting most places, too darn many American tourists! Considered several places in southern Europe. Too expensive and not quite what I'm looking for anyway.

I love what I've learned about Ecuador, the people, culture, flora and fauna, geography and even the expats. Honestly, this site has really influenced my decision to try Ecuador. Most of you are soooo incredibly kind and helpful. Some of you are a bit crotchety (that's ok, I'm honing my crotchety skills too) and seem to be quite articulate and opinionated. Love a good discussion and even a debate!

Now that I've smoothed the way by complimenting you...

Help! I wll be making a 3 week look-see trip April 20 to May 11 and would love to meet a few of you.

I'll be flying into Guayquil (don't think this is for me but could be wrong) then on to: Cuenca, Loja, Vilcabamba, Manta, Crucita and if I have time up to up to Pedernales.

Though I'm on a budget (staying in inexpensive hostels) I would love to pick up the tab on an adult beverage of your choice, just to pick your brain.

I'm renting a car. I know, I know. Ecuadorian drivers are insane! Having driven all over the US, Europe and the Caribbean, I'm pretty confident I'll be ok. I only mention this because I'll have wheels and can meet you almost anyplace. What I haven't been able to find statistics on is car thefts. Is this a problem? Is this why nobody seems to own a car???
I'm a single lady so security will be an issue. Any tips about security or anything else you find important, would be greatly appreciated.
