thoughts on accomodation

My wife and I will be coming down this winter to look around for six week, do some exploring and hopefully meet up with some of you ex-pats already travelling or settled there. We plan to fly in to Guayaquil, and then take a week or so to travel up to stay in Cuenca for a few days and then also travel to Loja and Vilcabamba.

We were planning on staying for a few days at the Hotel Apartments Otorongo in Cuenca. I don’t know if anyone here knows anything about this place but if you do any feedback would be greatly appreciated:

We are not sure yet where we might stay in Loja or Vilcabamba. Any ideas there would be greatly appreciated as well. At this point I’m just thinking of asking when we get down there, or going through Travelocity or booking.com. We then plan to spend about four weeks exploring the southern coastal area, and again could be using word of mouth or one of those booking sites. I guess the other option might be renting a place in one coastal city for two or three weeks and do overnight trips from there.

My main question for this thread is this. What is the better plan? Renting a place has the advantage of creating a temporary home base and would likely be much more affordable than three weeks in different hotels. It would also give us a bit better sense of what it could be like to “live” there. The disadvantage is dealing with bookings and deposits, etc.

On the other hand, booking hotels does not require any deposit, and I’ve heard once you arrive at the location a person can negotiate a price for staying additional days.

I would love to hear people’s opinion on this. Gracias.
