Slow Travel for 6-9 months in Ecuador

My wife and I will begin a slow journey throughout South America next spring, with Ecuador the first destination for 6-9 months. We're heading down to scout Quito, Cuenca and Loja in a few weeks and would love some feedback. Have looked through a lot of the forum posts, so I know info is covered across dozens of posts. If you want to respond, awesome! Thanks in advance for taking the time. If not, no worries, you're still awesome!

Goal when we visit is to spend 4-5 days in each location to have an idea of what is the best fit. We're not going as tourists at all. We both work remotely, so our goal is to find the sweet spot where right-fit neighborhood meets cafes with wi-fi. Wi-fi is super important, so wondering if anyone has insight as to which region (Q, C or L) has a better wifi infrastructure.

We're not looking for gringolandia. We want to immerse ourselves into the culture during our time in Ecuador. From what very little I've seen about Loja, it sounds like an ideal spot. And, yes, very much aware that the expat community in Loja is much smaller than Quito and Cuenca.

Wouldn't mind meeting up with anyone who would like to talk about their experiences during our visit, so if let me know if you're open.

Would like to rent a car to drive from Cuenca to Loja (and Vilcabamba), and would like to hear of any experiences along those lines -- who to rent/not rent from, etc. We've read enough to know some people have horror stories and others have no problems at all as long as they go with the flow vs. imposing their U.S. will!
