Ecuador and English Speakers

For the many, many visitors and potential expats with little or no Spanish-speaking ability who are considering Ecuador to travel and/or live in, I thought you might be interested in an excerpt from today's (02/02/2024) La Hora newspaper that I've translated from Spanish to English...


EDUCATION. Although in Latin America there are improvements in English levels, Ecuador continues to occupy very low levels..
The country has one of the worst levels of English proficiency in the world. According to the English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2022 report, Ecuador is in 82nd place out of 111 countries in the world and in 18th position among 20 Latin American countries.

So, those of you who think everyone here speaks English be forewarned!
