Possible move to Cairo

I just received a job offer to teach history at a school in Cairo. I am trying to find out as much as I can before I make any concrete decisions. The school itself says it will find me a place to live with a flatmate. The school is quoting at 3000-4000LE a month. This seems expensive after reading other posts.
Any advice out there? Is this expensive? The claim is that the flat will be fully furnished and air conditioned. I have read some conflicting reports on air conditioning. Any thoughts or advice?
I have no doubts that it will be a huge culture shock. I currently live in Las Vegas (a strange, weird city itself). I have lived in Europe as an expat, but I was living in Germany working for an American Military school--so I was largely cushioned from hard core culture shock. Besides, that was Germany which was incredible and different but not TOO different.
Are there any expectations as far as an expat community in Cairo? Will I be able to meet other expats living in Cairo? I of course will want to mingle with locals, but I am also young and single and will want to have a social life.

I am VERY excited by this new adventurous prospect. I have traveled fairly extensively and I am a river guide and have navigated huge whitewater. I have a nicely developed sense of adventure but I also have a need to find out all I can (and be SAFE :).
If you have any advice for someone like me I would certainly welcome it!
Thanks in advance!
Here's to the adventure of it all.
