Arriving in August

Hi.
My wife and I are arriving in Cairo in August, we both have jobs and accommodation (Maadi)but do have some questions of a general and naive nature.
We were hoping to bring our computer out with us, so was wondering if the electric current is ok to run UK made appliances i.e. PC, phone chargers, cameras basically anything that needs recharging?
Can I set up wireless router?
Is a UK DVD compatible with Egyptian DVDs and vi-ca versa?
We were also wondering if the shipping costs from the UK would out weigh the costs of buying new once we arrive?
We would be so grateful for any advice/comments anyone has and look forward to maybe bumping into you one day.
