Safety in Cairo

Ive read some older posts considering safety in Cairo and really wanted to hear some up to date thoughts on the subject.

Im a female expat, and have experienced both good and bad during my time here in Cairo. I cant help thinking that the further removed from the poorer general local population you are as an Expat - notwithstanding drivers, maids etc of course, the less likely you are to feel threatened or actually experience the reality or level of poverty here which seems to drive people to be mean or fraudulent in their dealings with you? For example, walking in the streets of Zamalek or Maadi is different to walking in the streets of Nada City?
