best way to travel in france?

I am trying to find out the best & also cheapest way to travel around france, I will be taking my sons 10,7,5 y, we want to go to the Charente area to house hunt. the town we ideally want to reach is confolens but any where near is ok,
we live in the northwest uk close to warrington, I have intentions of car hiring if i don't drive there, any help is very welcome as is any opinions etc on the area,
