Question for freelancers

Do I have to do anything official to start working as a freelancer? (I am permitted to work in France.) I was always an employee, so don't know how this works in my home country, either, and am really at a loss. Presumably if I manage to find a client, I'll have income to pay tax on, so there must be some kind of registration process. Is it expensive? Could I wait to register until I actually have some income? If it's going to cost more than I'm likely to earn, I have to question whether I should proceed. If anyone has established themselves as a freelancer in France, I would appreciate any and all advice. Thank you!
