applying for work in France

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice on finding work in France.
I am from Quebec (Canada) and I work in Costumes for Theatre. Now, I would like advice on approaching employers for work so that I can hopefully secure a job in France before leaving.
I've heard that the only way of obtaining a long-term work visa in France is to have a job offer before leaving.
The impression I get is that French employers are reluctant to deal with foreign visas.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
