tourist visa

I have a student visa that is about to expire. Upon expiration, if I leave France for England or America for a few weeks, then reenter France, am I legally on a 90 day tourist visa? I know officially with the Schengen visa, after a 90 stay in the countries, one must leave and not reenter for at least 90 days. Would this also apply with a student visa?
I am hoping to receive new papers - a change of status from my student visa - but know the reality of obtaining them is small. I have many American friends who are or were illegal and tell me simply going to London every 90 days for a new stamp is sufficient to begin a new short term visa. However, i am worried that with two expired year long student visas in my passport, I might stand out to the French immigration control.
Any advice, past experience helpful. Thanks in advance.
