Health insurance and Social Security

I am aware that France charges 8% of income to subscribe to the national health insurance for Americans who acquire a carte de sejour and become long term residents.

However, I thought I'd check with folks who've had experience while I'm still in the planning stage...how is Social Security income handled? How about investment income?
