Using QWERTY keyboard on French computer

I'm ready to buy a badly needed new computer and have seen the one I want. My question is can I use my American qwerty keyboard with it? The HP people say no, and it would cause problems with Windows and the guarantee would not work. I've heard that there is a way to do this and would appreciate anyone's advice on exactly how--step by step! Thanks in advance.
