French Inheritance Laws

Hi, I need some info for my dad - he and his wife have lived in France for 2yrs now but we are confused as to what happens when he dies. I am his only surviving daughter and my step mum has 5 children from a previous marriage whom she does not want to have any inheritance.
We are being led to believe that the estate will be divided between us - will this be the case? If so can we change it? My dad has very little money so has to be affordable.
